Practice Images

These are some of the photos that I did as a practice that wont be used as part of my final images. They haven’t been edited at all and are just the raw file. I decided against using these because either the lighting/location was not right or they aren’t as higher quality as I want. These photos were also taken before I had a tutorial with my tutor and so at this point in my creative process, my idea was still the progression from good division to bad division as opposed to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

This photo of coins lined up was going to be one of my final photos but unfortunately I struggled with lighting them due to their shine. This photo was in the style of Jim Golden as the coins have been categorised and they are lined up equal distances apart. I also took on his birds-eye view camera angle to get a similar shot to his work. To light this, I was using a warm toned table lamp. I re-positioned it several times but due to its harshness, at least one face of the coins would be completely washed out with light. After a long time of adjusting camera angles, lighting and the subjects, I decided that I couldn’t make it work so that all of the faces of the coins were visible. If I were to try this shot again, I would use a softer light or put a light diffuser over it.

This photo I recreated for my final set of images. The reason I decided against using this photo is that the lighting and background are not particularly interesting. I used natural light from a window which doesn’t light the objects in a particularly interesting way and the background is just my desk and a few objects that are out of focus. In the final photo, I created more interesting lighting by having the pens back lit with a warm light, creating more shadows. The background, although similar, doesn’t include whats under my desk, making for a cleaner photo.

Another of my images that will not be my final image is this one of male and female toilets. When I took this photo, I had the intention of using it to show division as problematic in politics. There have been political debates surrounding whether public bathrooms should be made gender neutral so that all genders are able to use public toilets and transgender people don’t feel uncomfortable with having to decide which toilets to use and they wont be subjected to harassment and violence depending on their decision. In this photo, I wanted to show the division between the two toilets. Unfortunately due to the 18-55mm lens I used in this photo, the doors became distorted and appeared to turn out rather than appear on the same wall along a straight corridor. I also didn’t have much control over the lighting because the location was in an indoor public area. After my tutor and I decided to focus on OCD, I chose to not include the photo in my final images because it didn’t fit with the theme.
